Sometimes when it comes to finding your calling – and your passion – it takes saying “yes” at the right moment in time. For Jordan DeSilva ’23, that moment came before Cape Cod Community College’s 2023 Media Conference.
Jordan was asked by Cape-radio icon and 4Cs Professor Lisa “Z” Zinsius to be a speaker at the annual event, designed to introduce students to careers and opportunities in media.
“Professor Z gave me so much confidence when she asked me to present at the Conference. It allowed me the space to demonstrate my skills which, literally, led to the job I have now.”
It didn’t take long for Coxswain Media, the locally owned media group that features radio stations PIXY103, Y101, Frank FM, and Koffee FM, to take notice of Jordan’s talents. She was brought on board to assist with promotional events and quickly moved into managing the organization’s social media, infusing a modern knowledge of technology and passion for media into their public profiles. The skills she learned and honed while at 4Cs and at the College’s radio station, 90.7 WKKL, played a huge role in getting her to where she is now.
“Having access to real equipment, like the kind we used in WKKL, was excellent,” DeSilva said. “That plus public speaking classes, which allowed me to better communicate my ideas in a group setting, were really important in helping shape what I do now.”
A native of Sandwich, MA and a graduate of Sandwich High School, Jordan’s love for the arts has always been a part of her.
“I wasn’t much into sports, so I always leaned towards media studies and artistic things like that,” DeSilva said. “I’ve always been fascinated by sound and sound technology.” Her interests blossomed early when Jordan started composing music at 11-years old. Since then, she’s maintained a love for music and singing, including a role as National Anthem singer at the College’s 2023 Commencement ceremony.
With her degree from 4Cs in-hand, and a fast-rising career just taking off, Jordan remains grateful and humble about the experiences she’s had so far.
“My favorite part of my career is being able to wake up and do something that I love,” DeSilva said. “It’s not just doing the same thing every day, and that is emotionally fulfilling. The connections that I’ve made in just a short amount of time are amazing.”
When it comes to the next generation of communications students ready to make the leap into the professional world, Jordan offers this advice: “Don’t be afraid to take extra time to learn about the technology and equipment around you. Ask questions and have fun! There’s a lot to absorb.”
